Ice Hotel of Quebec City is also known as Hôtel De Glace. It is the first ever and the only true hotel of ice in the continent of North America. You can reach the hotel after a drive of just about 10 minutes from the down town of the city.
Ice Hotel of Quebec City was opened for the first time on January 1st 2001. The authorities built this hotel every year in December and announce an opening date of early January. The lifespan of this beautiful hotel is only three months. And every April, it is brought down. 50 workers built this hotel in a period of about one and a half month. The hotel makes its own snow each year with the help of a special mixture. A total of 30,000 tons snow and 500 tons of ice is used in building this hotel. The walls of the hotel are about four feet thick.
In 2001, there were 11 double bedrooms in the hotel, and now this number has increased up to 51 double beds. All the furniture present in the hotel is made up of ice, and so do the bed. The only heated place in the hotel is a bathroom. All the bathrooms are located in a separate and insulated structure. From 2001, more than 1 million tourists have visited this stunning place.
The architecture of Hôtel De Glace varies from season to season. Usually bed rooms, a large hall, a chapel, a bar, and a grand ice slide are present in this hotel. The premises are decorated with snow vaults and icy crystalline sculptures. The chapel of the Ice Hotel is one of the “10 dream wedding locations”.
