Pakistan has been one of those handful developing countries without access to 3G and 4G technology. With an estimated 30 million internet users in the country, Pakistan is considered one of the emerging markets in Asia. According to a recent report, 50% of Pakistan’s internet users access internet via mobile or smartphone. Despite interest from cellular companies, the government didn’t show any interest in auctioning the licenses. Afghanistan had 3G access a few years prior Pakistan, judge it yourself!
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced to auction licenses for 3G and 4G last year. There were a few hurdles in the auction as the government to bag as much money as possible for the bids. Somehow, the auction was set for 23rd April, 2014. An interactive feature was made available at decades old PTA website for the bidding process. The event was held at Marriot Hotel in the Federal Capital Islamabad.
After the 8 rounds of bidding, the final results were announced which are as under:
One 4G license remained unsold which is expected to be auctioned again within a few months.
The successful auction of 3G and 4G licenses will open a new venue in the field of mobile technologies however, many are concerned about the tariff.
